European markets open higher, encouraged by Wall Street rally

Istanbul, August 7 (Hibya)—European stocks were higher at the open on Wednesday as global markets looked to rally after a rout on Monday. The BIST 100 index in Borsa Istanbul started the day at 9,960.50 points, up 0.80 percent.

The banking index in Borsa Istanbul gained 0.97 percent and the holding index gained 0.82 percent. While all sector indices rose, the highest gainer was financial leasing factoring with 1.77 percent.

As markets opened, the pan-European Stoxx 600 was up 0.52 percent, with most regional bourses and sectors gaining. Bank stocks remained 1.29 percent higher, and food, beverage, and health-care stocks were the only sectors that pulled back.

Regional markets have seesawed since Monday's sharp global market declines; on Tuesday, European markets opened higher but turned lower later in a choppy trading session.

However, Wall Street’s rebound on Tuesday, which broke three days of losses, is helping to lift global sentiment. Asia-Pacific markets were up overnight, while U.S. stock futures were higher on Tuesday evening.
